Relay for Life 2009

''Service before Self"by others raised £150,000 for Cancer Research (UK)
With cash still coming in, the annual Relay for Life which took place at the John Wright Sports Centre on the 12-13th of June2009  looks like raising an amazing £108,000 for Cancer Research UK.
The event, which is organised by East Kilbride Rotary Club, has been growing from strength to strength over the years, and the number of participants is up on last year.
Hundreds of people took part in the relay and in the many other events.
The fun was officially started on Friday evening by local MSP Andy Kerr, who welcomed all those taking part in the relay, especially the survivors of cancer who took part in the first lap to express their support for the effort being made to raise cash towards the cost of finding a cure for the disease.
The first lap of the track was led by East Kilbride Pipe Band who lead the first lap behind the band were a large number of walkers who had all survived cancer.
This year 22 teams took part and one of the big highlights was the candle Bag ceremony. This year over 500 candles were lit in honour of loved ones affected by cancer. This was followed by lone piper Rotarian Roddy Shanks playing a lament which was followed by singing by Rosalind Scoular.
Other entertainment over the 24 hour relay included music from DJ David and local band No Way Jose. In the week before the relay, the band played at two local bars, The Murray and the Village Inn, where they raised a total of £1400 to add to the fund.
Fun for all the family came in the form of a bungee run and an assault course which was won by Whitemoss Athletic Club.
The best dressed tent award went to Cuts and Bruises first aid team and the fancy dress award went to ‘The Suepremes’.
A midnight moonwalk also took place which saw women walk round the track in their bras in honour of women who have been affected by breast cancer.
The team who won the award for getting into the spirit overall were the John Wright Sport Centre staff.
The Rotary Club are already looking forward to next year’s relay and would like to express their appreciation to everyone who took part or supported this year’s Relay for Life.
